A note about the ’90 model F150… Recently, I purchased a 1990 Ford F150 Regular Cab Pickup with the popular 4.9L straight six cylinder engine. A black pickup truck with grey interior, this is a sporty looking full size truck. An excellent value at $1800.00 and only having a modest 128,000 miles, I was very proud of my purchase.

These older model F150′s are a great value for the money and it’s surprising that more people don’t take advantage of these quality built trucks that have such low book values. Here’s how to remove the tail light assembly on a 1990 Ford F150:

On each tail light, there are two phillips head screws on the outer part of the light cover, horizontally positions. Remove these two screws and keep in a place you will remember for safe keeping. You’ll definitely need them later!

Next, open the tailgate of the truck and look on the inside panel below the support cable that holds the tailgate up. You’ll notice that there are two more phillips head screws with large black washers. Remove these two screws, but don’t try to remove the light cover just yet.

Next, you’ll need to take a flat tip screwdriver and gently pry the tail light assembly away from the truck body. Do this gently as these older lights do have a tendency to crack easily.

Once the brake light cover is extended out from the vehicle about two inches, you’ll notice the electrical lines for the actual turn signal and brake light bulbs. Turn these light sockets clockwise until you feel that they will pull out with minimal force. Once these are out, your tail light assembly will be free from the vehicle.

As a precaution, you may wish to wrap the light bulbs in plastic bags and tuck them into the vehicle body until you’re ready to replace the light cover.
