There are now seventy-eight million baby-boomers that are racing toward retirement and Fox News reports that there are 43 million Americans in this age bracket with bad credit.  It is now more important than ever that children of these parents start to understand the key elements as well as the financial issues that can come with having to take care of financial matters, both personal and those of an aging parent.

Sooner or later it happens to each and everyone of us, whether we want it to or not.  We cannot avoid the fact that our parents are getting older.  No one really thinks about it, nor does anyone really plan for it, but it does happen.  Are you going to be ready when your mother or father has to depend on you to live out the rest of their days?

As your parents become older, what are you going to do for them in terms of being able to provide care for them?  If they live in the same city as you, then is your life set up so that you can take them in and care for them?  Are they willing to give up their home and move into a new surrounding at their age?These are only a couple of questions that everyone must think about when they have an aging parent.  Long term care is a topic that no one wants to think about when it comes to their own parents, but it is something that happens.  It is not the financial burden that bothers us, but the emotional burden that dwells on our hearts and our minds.

No child wants to think about having to put their parent in a nursing home or even in an assisted living home when they reach the point where they need long-term care, but what are your options?  Have you planned for this day to happen?Parents and children need to discuss this situation prior to this time coming so that they can plan and make preparations.  By planning ahead they both can help elevate some of the financial burden that might exist should this situation ever occur.  Oftentimes, this option can be overwhelming as well as confusing for both parties, but they should be discussed ahead of time.
