A good way to decide whether or not a used Jeep is the right car for you is to go for a test drive. You can also learn of any potential problems, and look for signs to see if the car is in good condition. It is good to research different makes and models, ask questions, if possible, of current owners of the car you are interested in, and talk to dealers about the cars available on their lot. However, once you are behind the wheel, you can truly get a feel for how well the car drives, and determine if it is a good fit for you. Does the Jeep have enough head room or leg room? Can you easily find the gauges and controls?
The best time to test drive a used Jeep is when the engine is completely cold. Some cars do not start as easily when they are cold. This will reveal some chronic problems that you do not want to get stuck with if you decide to buy the car. Make sure the radio is off before you begin driving; you want to hear how the engine sounds, and be able to concentrate on the driving experience. During the test drive, you should concentrate on several points:
How does the car accelerate from a stop?
Check for blind spots
Listen to engine noise
How quickly or smoothly does the car downshift?
Try to drive up a hill
How well does the car brake?
Does it turn corners smoothly?
Do you hear any rattles or squeaks?
Suspension –how is the overall ride?
As much as possible, take your time and simulate conditions of your normal driving patterns. For example, if you drive a lot on the freeway, go on the highway and take the car up to the speed limit. You do not want to find out after buying the car that it does not perform the way you need it to. Even if you like the way the used Jeep drives, take it to a trusted mechanic to get a thorough inspection. Most dealers may not allow you to do this, especially if the car has received a guaranteed approval.
